Abstract

The Black Panthers formed in order to respond to political and social circumstances that angered them, terrifying police and government officials in the process. Specifically, the FBI had problems with the group that led them to take actions to ensure that the Panthers would dissolve. My research targeted memoirs, newspapers, and official FBI documents from their online vault. These primary documents helped me discover more about the tension between the Panthers and figures of authority and whether that tension was founded. Arguably, the most interesting finding was that the events orchestrated by the FBI were illegal, while the actions taken by the party were legal. Overall, my research showed that the U.S. government cannot always be trusted to take part in legal actions against organized groups of citizens.
