The Effects of Domestic Violence on Children

Shelby R. Erwin, Lynchburg College

Abstract

Domestic violence can not only be physically and psychologically damaging to its victims but it can also leave a lasting impression on those who witness it. Children are often the forgotten victims and as they witness this abuse they learn to accept it as a norm. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the services being provided to children when they enter a domestic violence shelter. These services are important as the time spent away from the abuser is critical in promoting healthy relationships and ways of coping with what they have experienced. Through secondary data analysis collected from a domestic violence shelter, an assessment can be done on the services that work well in implementing healthy relationships and breaking the generational cycle of violence often seen among kids who have grown up in abusive homes.
