College Lake was built in 1934. For many years the citizens of the surrounding community enjoyed the lake as a recreational area for boating, fishing, walking, and swimming. The lake has also served as an outdoor laboratory for students and faculty alike. After many decades, the College Lake Dam will be removed and Blackwater Creek restored to a stream channel through the former lake bed. The Community Memory Project aims to gather and preserve the living memory of College Lake for the University of Lynchburg and the surrounding community. Through these photos, stories, oral histories, and more, we will preserve the memory of this community landmark and its transformation over time.
