Abstract

Melanoma is the deadliest type of skin cancer killing one American every hour 1. To accurately diagnose and stage melanoma, a prompt biopsy must be performed to determine the depth of the lesion. Without early detection, melanoma can quickly metastasize and become fatal.

Due to a national shortage of Dermatologists, access to dermatologic care is limited making evaluations of suspicious lesions delayed.

The purpose of this article will be to inform the target audience about the existence of “Melanoma Initiative”. Nationwide enrollment of Dermatology providers into the Melanoma Initiative will offer patients more access to Dermatology care if a melanoma lesion is suspected.
