Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this article is to review the benefits of intermittent fasting for weight loss.

Method: A PubMed, CINAHL, and Google Scholar search was conducted with search terms intermittent fasting, benefits, and weight loss. Pertinent articles were retrieved, and they serve as the basis for this clinical review.

Results: Limited studies comparing the different IF methods to one another, as well as limited studies comparing IF to other popular weight loss programs/strategies.

Conclusion: The literature review and evidence-based medicine is important to educate patients wanting or needing to lose weight. The evidence reported in these articles show some promising results with IF as an effective weight loss tool. Further research is needed to support intermittent fasting and its benefits for weight loss.
