Abstract
Purpose: This article aims to review the safety and efficacy of using trazodone for insomnia in the geriatric population.
Method: A PubMed and Medline literature search was conducted using the search terms trazodone, insomnia, geriatric or elderly. Search criteria used to filter results included the English language, human subjects, between the years 2016-2021, and full text. Nine relevant articles were retrieved and used as the basis of this clinical review.
Results: Based on the current research, trazodone is a safe and effective treatment for insomnia in the geriatric population.
Conclusion: When behavioral and cognitive therapies are ineffective against insomnia based on current data, trazodone is a safe and effective treatment in the geriatric population.
