Abstract

There are an estimated 12 million Unauthorized Immigrants (UIs) in the United States (US), and 5.6 of them are estimated to be from Mexico. Often, UIs leave their homelands in search of opportunity, but face a significant amount of disparity in the US – particularly in healthcare. This discussion piece explores some of the healthcare disparities that are faced by many UIs from Mexico and challenges healthcare systems across the US to make active strides to break down barriers to care, with a focus on one particular encounter in which a patient had an extended hospital stay - 52 days - that was prolonged by the health disparities she faced.
