Abstract
ABSTRACT
In the United States, mergers and acquisitions are common in the civilian healthcare industry. The Military Health System is in the process of major reform to comply with the National Defense Authorization Act directing all military services to transfer authority, direction, and control of all hospitals and clinics to the Defense Health Agency (DHA). Post-merger the DHA has implemented a joint market structure to oversee the management. On July 26, 2021, the Hawaii Military Market (HMM) was formally established and is composed of all the military healthcare facilities from the Army, Navy, and Air Force on the island of Oahu. Although this merger differs from mergers in the civilian industry, there are many similar post-integration challenges and potential solutions that have to do with people, culture, and leadership. Knowing these challenges, and understanding the operational environment, the culture, and the people, the HMM leadership can make better decisions for successful integration. This paper will offer so ways to ensure a successful post-merger integration by adopting management principles, developing an integration strategy, and leading change with cultural integration.
