Abstract
This article will elucidate the risks associated with firefighting and go on to discuss current NFPA annual cardiovascular screening and additional testing not mentioned in current annual screening recommendations. The article will explore adaptations to current NFPA requirements based on the evidence from a review of the literature including laboratory testing, stress testing, and cardiac imaging. The end goal of this article is to stimulate thought in the health and wellness committee members of the NFPA and make small recommendations to current screening guidelines and encourage additional laboratory testing, cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPX) for all FFs on a routine basis, and consider the use of CAC as a risk stratification tool.
