Cardiac Surgery and Critical Care

Purpose: The purpose of this literature review article is to discuss the different temporary mechanical support modalities for cardiogenic shock after myocardial infarction.

Method: A PubMed literature search was conducted with search terms cardiogenic shock, myocardial infarction, intra-aortic balloon pump, impella, and cardiogenic shock management.

Results: There is no significant morbidity or mortality benefit based on different mechanical support devices in the management of cardiogenic shock.

Conclusion: The literature does not suggest a superior mechanical treatment when evaluating mortality; however, did address post-implementation complications. More research is needed to determine if there is a statistically significant benefit of one mechanical support device over another and if there is a significant difference in complications.
