Stimulant Use Disorder (SUD): A Clinical Review
Abstract
Stimulant use disorder (SUD) is primarily treated with nonpharmacological and pharmacological treatment options. Evidence has shown that contingency management (CM) is an important non-pharmacological treatment option that can be utilized in the treatment of stimulant use disorder (SUD). The treatment is correlated with strong evidence-based data for both cocaine and methamphetamine use disorders. There is no current FDA approved medication for SUD, however studies reveal positive outcomes for a variety of medications. Pharmacological treatment data is limited for stimulant use disorder. Higher quality clinical trials are needed to conclude the benefits of pharmacotherapies. Exploring the pathophysiology, clinical presentation, and treatment options for SUD can help support medical professionals in making informed decisions for patients diagnosed with SUD.
