Healthcare systems in the United States are changing. Practices that have historically been focused on patient care are forced to become business minded, resulting in the employment of managers and supervisors without basic medical knowledge. The number of physician associates in the healthcare workforce is rapidly increasing, and PA retention by employers is crucial due to the shortage of providers. Multiple studies have shown that clinicians in leadership positions improve the quality of medical care and increase employee job satisfaction. Further research is needed to evaluate which medical background and management training are most effective for managing healthcare systems.
