Abstract
Labiaplasty represents one of the most frequently performed elective genital cosmetic surgical procedures, with procedural volume continuing to increase in contemporary practice. This manuscript provides a critical synthesis of the current literature examining clinical indications, patient-reported motivations, surgical outcomes, and the influence of digital media on perceptions of normative vulvar morphology. While functional impairment – including discomfort during physical activity, sexual intercourse, or with form-fitting garments – remains the primary indication for surgical intervention, aesthetic concerns represent a significant contributing factor in patient decision-making. The available evidence demonstrates consistently high patient satisfaction rates and favorable safety profiles across a range of surgical techniques. However, important methodological limitations persist, including a lack of long-term outcome data and the absence of validated, standardized reporting measures. The rapid expansion of digital media platforms has further complicated this landscape, as patients are increasingly exposed to homogenous and potentially non-representative aesthetic ideals that may shape expectations and influence treatment-seeking behavior. Collectively, the current literature underscores the importance of comprehensive, patient-centered preoperative counseling that highlights the wide spectrum of normal vulvar anatomy while supporting informed and autonomous decision-making. Future research should prioritize the evaluation of long-term functional and aesthetic outcomes, the development of standardized outcome measures, and further investigation into the role of media in shaping patient perceptions and procedural preferences.
