Abstract
This study examines the impact of Physician Assistants/Physician Associates (PAs) within academic plastic and reconstructive surgery (PRS) departments, evaluating their clinical, operative, educational, and financial contributions. A structured literature search of PubMed, Google Scholar, and ScienceDirect identified nine peer-reviewed articles to evaluate utilization models, productivity measures, and team outcomes associated with PA integration in academic surgical environments, with attention to PRS. Findings consistently demonstrate that PAs strengthen perioperative continuity and improve operative efficiency. Evidence indicates that PA involvement expands clinic access, increases surgical throughput, and stabilizes workflows affected by resident rotation and hour limits. In academic settings, PAs preserve institutional knowledge and support trainee education while maintaining service coverage. Financially, PAs provide positive revenue contributions and offer cost-effective staffing solutions. Despite these benefits, the literature identifies persistent variability in role definition and reimbursement barriers. Standardized frameworks and prospective studies are needed to quantify the long-term economic and clinical impact of PAs in academic PRS. Establishments should focus on competency-based privileging to optimize PA practice. Furthermore, future research should investigate specific leadership models within these settings to establish formal pathways for PA advancement in academic surgical departments.
