Abstract
As the global cancer burden intensifies, traditional care models struggle to meet complex patient needs, necessitating the optimization of multidisciplinary teams. This review examines the vital role of oncology advanced practice providers (APPs), specifically physician assistants/associates (PAs) and nurse practitioners (NPs), beyond cost-effective productivity, expanding the current understanding of their impact on clinical and patient-centered outcomes. Evidence suggests that integrating APPs into oncology care teams significantly enhances care across three domains. First, they expand access to oncologic care through APP-led specialty clinics and clinical trial participation, conducting both initial and follow-up visits, including in underserved rural areas. Second, clinical outcomes improve through reduced emergency department visits, hospitalizations, and shorter inpatient lengths of stay, with emerging data suggesting a correlation between APP-augmented access and increased overall survival. Finally, patient-centered outcomes, including symptom management and quality of life, are enhanced by APP-driven education and advanced care planning discussions. Despite these benefits, widespread implementation is challenged by inconsistent scope-of-practice policies, professional resistance, and role ambiguity. As much of the current literature is limited to single-institution case studies, multi-institutional prospective research is required to confirm universal scalability. Ultimately, this review emphasizes that APPs are essential to the modern oncology care team and calls for their full integration to ensure high-quality, equitable patient outcomes.
