Abstract

Approximately one in four cancer patients is a parent of dependent children.1 This population faces higher risks of depression, anxiety, and psychological distress compared to other cancer patients.2 Compounding these emotional burdens, they also face financial toxicity and childcare concerns that can lead to treatment delays, increased stress and suboptimal clinical outcomes.  This review evaluates current evidence from CINAHL, Embase and PubMed to identify potential strategies to mitigate these risks. Interventions, such as embedding child-life specialists in adult oncology settings and providing patient and family-specific counseling, may reduce anxiety and distress in patients, spouses, and children.  Evidence also shows that practical assistance with financial navigators and childcare can improve adherence to cancer treatment schedules and relieve stress.

However, much of the current literature in this review is focused on small, homogenous study populations. To better support this growing patient group, future research should prioritize diverse enrollment and larger-scale studies to validate these supportive interventions.
