Abstract
Access to psychiatric care remains limited for underserved and rural populations. Telehealth has expanded opportunities for mental health service delivery, and recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI) offer tools such as automated documentation, predictive analytics, and clinical decision support. These innovations may enhance efficiency, improve early detection, and widen access to care while reducing long-standing mental health disparities. However, challenges related to broadband access, reimbursement, algorithmic bias, and clinical liability remain. AI-enabled telepsychiatry can strengthen value-based care by reducing hospitalizations, improving continuity, and expanding access in communities most affected by workforce shortages. This paper examines how AI-enabled telepsychiatry can improve psychiatric access for underserved populations and outlines strategies for responsible, equitable implementation.
