Abstract
The purpose of this article is to identify an updated prevalence of acute coronary syndrome in adults ages 20-40 years old. Analysis of articles across Google Scholar, PubMed, and JAAPA reported more modifiable risk factors such as obesity, current smoking, and substance use among the young adult population. ACS in young adults is more commonly due to nonatherosclerotic causes, increasing prevalence, and differences in treatment compared to patients >40 years old. Current studies are strong in their significant population size, but many studies struggle to identify the exact age of “young adults” as it relates to acute coronary syndrome. Future research needs to be done analyzing the most effective treatment interventions for this population and to repeat these studies in other parts of the country to determine the prevalence of acute coronary syndrome in young adults nationally.
