Abstract
ABSTRACT
Obesity is the primary modifiable risk factor for Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM), and dietary changes remain a central component of T2DM management. A comprehensive literature search was conducted using PubMed and CINAHL, identifying studies that assessed the effects of a plant-based diet on HbA1c, weight, cardiometabolic risk factors, insulin resistance, and insulin sensitivity in adults with T2DM. The findings suggest that plant-based diets improve glycemic control, with a significant reduction in HbA1c. Plant-based diets also reduced BMI, insulin sensitivity, insulin resistance, and cardiometabolic risk factors. However, the included studies varied in their definitions of “plant-based”, with some allowing limited animal products and others excluding them entirely. These inconsistencies highlight the need for further research to examine variations in plant-based diets and their specific effects on clinical outcomes in adults with T2DM. These findings provide evidence for the utilization of plant-based dietary interventions in the management of T2DM in adults.
