Abstract

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the management of prediabetes and assess its effectiveness in preventing progression to type 2 diabetes mellitus, as prediabetes is its precursor. Specifically, it will explore the effectiveness of lifestyle modifications alone or the combination of lifestyle modifications with pharmacotherapy, namely metformin, in the management of prediabetes in reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes. A comprehensive search across multiple electronic databases was conducted, limited to the past 5 years. Research has shown that both lifestyle modifications and metformin use in the management of prediabetes have proven to be effective in reducing hemoglobin A1c levels and preventing type 2 diabetes. The data also suggest that lifestyle interventions, including exercise, are associated with a greater risk reduction than metformin. The clinical significance of this research includes, but is not limited to, optimizing health and reducing healthcare costs. This review emphasizes the potential to strengthen guidelines for managing prediabetes and to apply stricter emphasis and protocol in the management to prevent type 2 diabetes.
