Abstract

This thesis examines the impact that the United States Women’s National Soccer Team has had on women’s sports in America. Prior to 1985, there was no organized U.S. Women’s National Team. Since its formation, the women’s national team has been immensely successful, dominating the international soccer stage. Due to this success, this team has been extremely influential because it has opened an avenue for many important discussions. Viewership and television ratings after competitive contests such as the 1999 and 2015 Women’s World Cups indicate that women’s sports are capable of being commercially successful. These successes have allowed members of the USWNT to take a stand on the fight for equality in sport and have an influence in the social realm.
