Abstract

Although several instruments were fundamental towards the development of classical music, the cello served a crucial role as an instrument since it provided the foundation for many classical pieces. With the intent of improving music pedagogy and performance, the purpose of this research is to examine the development and use of the cello from early antiquity to modern-day. The specific problems of this study were to outline a comprehensive timeline for the development of the cello; to investigate the different uses for the cello as a solo and ensemble instrument; and to explore the cello's diverse playing styles and techniques found throughout the different classical music periods.

The cello contained a deep and rich historical development dating back to early antiquity as it slowly became the modern instrument that it is today. In the ensemble, the cello matured in the different roles that it played and allowed for greater flexibility and use of the instrument. Different cello techniques and playing styles became refined as time progressed that allowed for cellists to become more expressive and virtuosic. Researching an instrument and it's corresponding elements are crucial in understanding the instrument's history and extending pedagogy to future generations.
