Abstract

Flutes Around the World

Flutes can be described in America’s context as a silver instrument with various keys. With the intent of improving music pedagogy and performance, the purpose of this research is to investigate the different types of flutes used in various cultures around the world. The particular problems of this study were to (1) identify the various types of flutes used in cultures around the world; (2) explore the overall purpose of these flutes in the cultures; and (3) incorporate some of these flutes into middle school level lesson plans.

My first research problem described flutes used in seven different cultures around the world, including China, Japan, Mexico, South America, Native American, Ireland, and Hawaii. My second problem detailed that the uses in the culture usually are spiritual, romantically, recreational, ritualistic, nature and animal imitation, and healing. My third research problem determines how these instruments can be incorporated in the educational curriculum, exampled by writing two lesson plans in Appendix A & B. Through extensive research it was discovered that various types of flutes with different purposes are played in these cultures and can be incorporated into middle school level education.
