Abstract
Although music shows a special place in the art of theatre, it will create different expressions about life that no one can explain and why Broadway Musicals are popular. With the intent of improving music pedagogy and performance, the purpose of this research shows the Broadway Musical development as an art form. The problems of this research are to trace the development of the Broadway Musical from 1929 to 2020; to examine the differences between musicals performed On Broadway and Off- Broadway; to compare and contrast West Side Story and Jersey Boys.
Broadway musicals are led to be popular because they have the brightest imagination. Mixer (2017) reported that imagination becomes a huge part in musicals because it shows the visual performance of the show which makes it why musicals once again are so popular today and back then. Cross (2019) reported that Broadway Musicals become popular because of the many costumes, lighting, scenery, and props they use to create the story line. History.com, E (2010) reported West Side Story as an On Broadway Musical and that is why it became so popular because it started out as an On Broadway show. Broadway musicals become popular with adding many developments of the art form, eventually leading to success and success in the future Broadway world.
