Abstract

The rise of mental health concerns in college students has led to an increasing interest to develop a way to alleviate the symptoms of stress, anxiety, and depression. To find a way to assist individuals who may be suffering from these overwhelming feelings, the current study observes the short term effects a creative activity might have on these symptoms in college students. The hypothesized results of the current study is a reported decrease in stress, anxiety, and depression after a finger painting intervention when compared to a control group who did not participate in the intervention. Our expected findings are important to acknowledge because of how a simple expressive art activity may impact the well-being of an individual who might be in need of a coping mechanism or alternative form of treatment that could enhance their positive mood and state of mind.
