Abstract
Gifted learners are a diverse group with unique characteristics and needs that require specialized identification, assessment, and programming. This portfolio explores gifted special populations, including Native American/Indigenous students, African American students, Hispanic/Latino/a/x students, English Learners/Multilingual learners, twice-exceptional students, financially under-resourced and rural students, creatively gifted students, as well as highly gifted learners. Each section delves into the defining characteristics of these populations, shedding light on the challenges and strengths that differentiate them from the general gifted population. Programming strategies tailored to the needs of each population are also examined, emphasizing differentiation, acceleration, enrichment, and social-emotional support. Specific teaching practices, such as scaffolding, culturally responsive pedagogy, and strength-based approaches, are recommended to create an inclusive and equitable learning environment. Additionally, the portfolio highlights interventions that offer support, ensuring that gifted students thrive across various domains.Identification and assessment are also critical to ensuring appropriate support for gifted special populations. This portfolio reviews the effectiveness of current programming methods, and offers additional strategies to support underrepresented gifted learners, giving educators the ability to better recognize and nurture gifted potential in these diverse student groups. By addressing the complexities of gifted special populations, this portfolio serves as a comprehensive resource for educators, administrators, and policymakers seeking to enhance services and opportunities for all gifted learners.
