Abstract
Through the use of primary source evidence as well as scholarly resources, I have produced an article on the Realignment of 1860 and the birth of the Republican Party. Primary sources include evidence of all kinds, including, but not limited to, newspaper articles, journal entries, congressional proceedings, limited polling data, and election results. This research will then answer the persistent question: was the Realignment of 1860 a Secular Realignment or a Critical Election? This exploration will also be helpful to those studying other realignments throughout history and American politics in general.
