Abstract
The purpose of the project was to create an augmented reality application. “Augmented reality” generally refers to the superposition of computer-generated elements onto a live camera feed. To demonstrate a simple, practical use for this technology, I chose to create a virtual tour of Lynchburg College for Android phones. The user would look through the phone’s camera and pan around campus; the application would recognize different buildings and landmarks, and display information about each location. There were two, distinct pieces that needed to be developed. The application needed to know the phone’s location and orientation and provide navigation to landmarks; and the application needed to display a live feed from the phone’s camera and show computer generated displays on top of the feed.
