Abstract
People compare themselves to others many times everyday, but few realize the consequences of making such comparisons. Societal expectations of beauty are mostly unachievable, so social comparisons of beauty, and how people react to them, can be detrimental for individual self-esteem. The purpose of this study was to illuminate the effects of judging others positively or negatively and the impact of those judgements on body image satisfaction. Participants were asked to fill out a body image satisfaction questionnaire, write down positive or negative characteristics from a photo, gaze into a full length mirror of themselves, and finally complete the body image satisfaction scale a final time. Consequently, a new mind-set could be established that being positive towards others will help the individual have higher body image satisfaction.
