Abstract

Modest Petrovich Mussorgsky (1829-1888) influenced the creation of a Russian nationalistic style during the Romantic era. With the intent of improving music pedagogy and performance, the purpose of this research is to investigate the circumstances of Mussorgsky’s compositional style. The specific problems of this study were to: (1) provide a basic biographical sketch of Modest Mussorgsky; (2) describe the Russian national style as used by Mussorgsky; and (3) investigate the circumstances of which Boris Godunov, Pictures at an Exhibition and Night on Bald Mountain were composed.
