The Cycle of Domestic Violence

Selena Herrera, Lynchburg College

Abstract

In the United States, statistics indicate that women are being physically injured every nine seconds by their partners in what is now termed Domestic Violence. Over the years, millions of women and even children have lost their lives at the hands of their abuser. The purpose of this research is to build a profile of victims and to explore possible trends as related to Domestic Violence locally while taking into consideration the laws and desensitization of society as well as stigmas associated with victimization. This is significant because Domestic Violence has been overlooked and as time progresses its essential to find ways to help victims and reduce the ongoing cycle of violence. This study involved data from a local Domestic Violence shelter within Virginia for multiple years.
