Abstract

The construction of a vertical chromatography instrument was completed. Currently, chemistry students and professors have to perform column chromatograph by hand. This laborious process is very time consuming and commercial chromatography instruments cost over $5000. Using Arduinos with pumps and stepper motors along with other raw materials, an automated chromatography instrument was constructed for a fraction of the cost. A detailed operating manual, complete with a troubleshooting guide, was also completed. Completion of this machine allows for future students and professors to spend time exploring other phenomena associated with chromatography.
