Abstract
I have chosen to compare the legend of the Phantom of the Opera and the history of La Palais Garnier (Opera Garnier) to discuss what parts of the legend are plausible and what can be dismissed as myth. With the intent of imploring French history, the purpose of this research is to analyze the legend of La Palais Garnier and separate plausibility from myth. The particular problems of this study are to to define the Phantom legend of La Palais Garnier and its history, to compare and contrast history to legend, and to determine the plausibility of the legend. I aim to research the Phantom legend and find it in its most original form, and mark its main points and events. In addition, I will research La Palais Garnier to discover what happened at the opera house, as well as in Paris, during the reign of the Phantom to determine how well they match one another. Finally, I will state the discrepancies between the two stories against the similarities. In conclusion, I will thoroughly analyze and explore the subject matter of the Phantom of the Palais Garnier in order to implore the French history and how legends develop in France.
