Abstract

The United States is going through a crisis right now with all the recent shootings that have happened. Since the recent shootings, many people have called upon Congress to create new laws to prevent future atrocities, however, it would be in our best interest to know if the existing state laws work before creating more federal laws. In my research, I used the 50 states to test my hypothesis and to see if I am able to answer my question of “Are gun laws in different states effective?” I answered this by researching crime rates, background checks, populations, executions by state, self-defense laws, carry permits, and poverty rates in all fifty states for the years of 2005, 2010, and 2015. After collecting all my data, I was able to notice that gun laws did not have a significant stance on the high crime rates. Instead, the high crime rates were from economic variables like poverty rates and the population. Guns are not the problem; the problem is the economy was causing high crime rates.
