Abstract
Infertility affects 50 million reproductive aged couples worldwide. Infertility is defined as the inability to conceive within 12 months of unprotected sexual intercourse in women less than 35 years old, or within 6 months in women greater than 35. After 12 months of unsuccessful conception, the man and woman need to be thoroughly tested for infertility which includes extensive laboratory testing, ultrasonography, a hysterosalpingogram, semen analysis, and genetic testing. Couples have many options for treatment after causes have been identified. Intrauterine insemination (IUI) and in vitro fertilization (IVF) are similar in invasiveness and will be compared. IUI is completed by placing sperm directly inside the uterus. IVF is completed by fertilizing an egg in a laboratory then placing the embryo in the uterus. IUI is most cost effective compared to IVF, costing $300 to $900 per session compared to $12,000 per cycle of IVF. The success rate for IVF is 47.6% after 1 cycle treatment versus IUI where success is 50% after 6 rounds of treatment. Artificial reproductive therapy has been more successful over the past decades and thus healthcare providers need to be aware of the implications of the procedures and refer patients promptly.
