Abstract

History and geography are inherently intertwined. However, these two subjects are not always considered together. Geography plays a key role in understanding the events of the past. Every story has a setting. Historic Sandusky’s mission to educate the public about the rich history of Lynchburg is taking the next step -- it’s going digital. ESRI’s ArcGIS software allows us to explore our city as it was during the 19th century. From noteworthy households to the Battle of Lynchburg, this mapping project will be an extensively researched and continuously updated resource for students, citizens, and enthusiasts alike. This year, our poster focuses on the processes used in bringing maps from the Civil War online and what kinds of information we can glean from them.
