Abstract

This project was inspired by a paper demonstrating the construction of a photo-catalysis reactor with open source parts. Photocatalysis is the process of accelerating a chemical reaction in a solid with the addition of light of some form. Here, ultraviolet light is used with titanium oxide to create a filter to react with and remove chemicals from the air. We designed and constructed a reactor that will be used in future student research and courses. An Arduino microcontroller was used to monitor output values from data sensors while a Python program read these values and displayed the data in real time. After the basic components of the system were found to be functioning, a 3D printed housing for the parts and filter was designed and printed to create a single unit that can be used with any computer running the proper code to examine the effects of photo-catalytic filtering.
