Abstract

German born George Frideric Handel (1685-1759) moved to England to compose operas and oratorios during the Baroque period (1600-1750). With the intent of improving music pedagogy, the purpose of this research was to examine the life of Handel. The particular problems of this study were to (1) prepare a biographical sketch of Handel’s life; (2) identify compositions transcribed for high school band; and (3) create a concert program, with performance notes, on Handel’s music.

The musical experiences gained from Handel’s travels from Germany to Italy and permanently to London contributed to his compositional style, specifically operas and oratorios. Although he primarily composed for vocalists and wrote several instrumental pieces, Handel’s music has been transcribed for high school level bands. The arrangements of his music can be united for an educational and entertaining concert for students and audience alike. This research can be furthered through adding to the list of transcribed music and creating programs for different groups such as middle or collegiate level bands.
