Abstract

In the state of Virginia in order to become a teacher certain state-selected assessments must be completed. These assessments are required for every candidate who is pursuing a teaching career. One of these assessments is the Virginia Communication and Literacy Assessment (VCLA), which was created to measure as the name simply states communication and literacy skills. This brought forth the question, why is it required for health and physical education teachers to take this assessment? Therefore, in this study statistical analysis was done to see whether or not higher scores on the VCLA translates into more effective health and physical education teachers. To measure effectiveness of the teachers, standards from the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) will be studied. The main focus was from standard 4, which measures teachers effectiveness on their former students, and also the satisfaction of employers. These findings should prove that higher scores on the VCLA will not correspond to more effective teachers/better employees.
