Abstract
Previous research has demonstrated the effect exercise can have on memory retention. Much of the previous research has focused on the role of long-term exercise. The goal of our research study was to determine the effect of a single, acute exercise activity on a reading comprehension task in college students. All participants read a brief reading passage and then completed one of two activities. Based on randomly assigned sessions, participants either completed a 10 min step exercise activity or a viewed a 10 minute video. After the video or exercise, the participants were then given a 5 item reading comprehension test on the passage they read. It is expected that students in the exercise group will have improved reading comprehension compared to those who viewed the video material. The research conducted will be beneficial in finding ways for students to learn more efficiently, and succeed in their academic careers and in the workplace. This also has implications for how instructors can better facilitate the learning process in a classroom.
