Abstract

The primary goal of our research is to look at the association between relationship satisfaction, jealousy types, and attachment styles. The independent variable is jealousy with 3 levels; cognitive, emotional, and behavioral. The dependent variables are relationship satisfaction (high or low) and secure attachment. Approximately 30 college students who currently are or have been involved in a romantic relationship completed self-report measures of jealousy, relationship satisfaction, and attachment style. We hypothesized that a high level of emotional jealousy, when compared to the other types, will result in a positive association with relationship satisfaction and secure attachment style. We hypothesized that high cognitive jealousy and behavioral jealousy, when compared to emotional jealousy, will result in a negative association with relationship satisfaction and secure attachment style. The findings of this study are important in order to help couples who may be struggling with feelings of jealousy, identify what type of jealousy they are experiencing and how it can affect their relationship satisfaction and reflect their attachment style and therefore would make the issue easier to address.
