Abstract

This study involved designing a curriculum plan for secondary education which would incorporate various learning experiences throughout the course of a nine week period. With the intent of improving music pedagogy, the purpose of this research was to link music education with reading and writing. The particular problems of this study were to (1) come up with a topic which would interest students; (2) identify appropriate music selections; and (3) creating ten learning strategies that would integrate the selected topic.

Problem one was resolved by selecting African American Spirituals, which included both a variety of selections and provided a vast history. The music selected for this study included: Deep River, Go Down Moses, Take Me To The Water, The Wayfaring Stranger, and Steal Away. Activities that were created incorporated: a historical background, graphic organizer, flash cards, cooperative learning activity, reading strategies/music listening, interdisciplinary activity for social studies, interdisciplinary activity for the other fine arts, journal writing, compare and contrast worksheet, and a nonlinguistic representation activity. All of these fabricated a unit plan that allowed students to learn about African American Spirituals of the past and present along with their composers.
