Abstract

Mental health is a serious and important topic in our society today. To look at the different perspectives of mental health we have to look at the influences of those perspectives. In this study I am comparing and contrasting the different perspectives of mental health based on sex. A sample of seventeen senior college students were surveyed and interviewed. Seven students, male and female, were given an anonymous questionnaire about mental health and the impacts. Ten students, five male and five female, were interviewed with similar questions about their view of mental health and how they handle mental health issues. Analyzing their responses and the impacts of being a college student on personal mental health, led me to my conclusion on the different perspectives based on sex. For all seventeen students, the main influence on their perspectives of mental health was gender roles and personal experiences. Both male and female share similar perspectives on the seriousness of mental health and the impacts of the college lifestyle on mental health but different perspectives on how to handle mental health issues.
