Abstract

Propaganda In Germany During World War II

As music has shown to influence individuals, pieces created in Germany during World War II (WWII) (1939-1945) strengthen societal perspective of their home country. With the intent of improving music pedagogy and performance, the purpose of this research was to examine music in Germany during World War II. The particular problems of this study were to (1) examine German nationalism in WWII; (2) explore the use and effects of propaganda; (3) identify musical aspects of Germany which would be considered propaganda; and (4) create a lesson plan entitled “Musical Maladies.”

Nationalism played a significant role in the German citizens’ support of the war. The efforts of Adolf Hitler (1889-1945) to maintain the constant subjection of targeted messages in the form of propaganda increased the patriotic spirit of the German people. Music, a common form of propaganda utilized by the German government, allowed the Nazi Regime to unify individuals. A lesson plan, entitled “Musical Maladies,” could be used to teach high school programs about its effects. Music in the form of propaganda permeated throughout World War II Germany, showing the true power music has, and, for further research, individual pieces should be studied to identify their level of contribution.
