Abstract

The language of poetry extends far beyond the creative writing classroom; song lyrics, Bible verses, instruction manuals, and even advertisements utilize the power of words to portray a message. Like an art portrait, everyone’s unique perception helps to create a larger sense of unity through diversity. Poets emphasize the many ways culture constructs varying opinions amongst the human race. At the University of Lynchburg, people of many different demographics share one common thread: the pursuit of community. Whether local or foreign, English teacher or scientist, white or black, Lynchburg is the centerpiece of intellectual curiosity. While the school remains situated in central Virginia, this landmark serves as a celebration of culture. As humans, this unification brings forth many emotions, including the power to love one another as brothers and sisters. Feelings do not always match the Hollywood script, and this poetry reading will demonstrate the strength of language to bring people together. With personal anecdotes and reflections on the recent years of transitioning into college education, these poems will breathe life into the narrative regarding how Lynchburg has become home to so many. This collection highlights the victory of finding this new family, whether one lives down the road or across the Atlantic. Anyone can write; through this presentation, students and faculty can enjoy the inextricably linked powers of poetry, love, and community.

Comments

As this is a poetry reading, the "script" mostly pertains to poems and a few points I aim to address in between. This will be casual as I hope to relate with the audience through my experiences. Please let me know if additional details are necessary. I estimate the reading to take 20-25 minutes.
