Abstract

There is a growing teacher shortage and many have highlighted burnout as a primary reason for exiting the profession. Furthermore, compassion fatigue has been identified as a specific type of burnout that teachers often face due to the nature of it being a helping profession. Alongside compassion fatigue, resilience and empathy have been shown to be related to teachers’ overall well-being and desire to remain in the field. There has been an abundance of research from 2020 to 2023 looking at similar variables in teachers during the pandemic; however, there is a dearth of research that explicitly examines empathy, resilience, and compassion fatigue (burnout) as predictors of several dimensions of teachers well-being, including compassion satisfaction (job satisfaction), life satisfaction, happiness, and turnover intentions. It was found that teachers’ compassion fatigue is a significant predictor of their compassion satisfaction, life satisfaction, happiness, and turnover intentions. It was also found that teachers’ resilience is a significant predictor of their happiness. These results help us to determine some key factors that tend to impact emotional contentment and overall happiness in teachers, which allows us to understand what might be the leading factors of teachers deciding to leave the classroom.
