Abstract

Title: Identification and Management of Mental Health Symptoms and Conditions Associated with COVID-19

Abstract: Following the advice of the Centers for Disease Control, the United States government issued a nationwide lockdown of all businesses and schools on March 11, 2020, due to the increasing spread of COVID-19. Closures of schools meant that students would have to quickly adapt to the new world of virtual learning and be able to troubleshoot any problems that came with virtual learning. The purpose of this study was to determine how COVID-19 negatively affected the mental health of primary school students ages five through eighteen during and after the global pandemic A literature review was conducted to focus on the negative mental health aspects of COVID-19 on those aged five to eighteen years of age instead of long-term complications of the virus itself due to the mental crisis that is currently happening. It was found that throughout the pandemic, children and adolescents between the ages of five and twenty-two had an overall increase in anxiety and depressive symptoms, stress, sleep disturbances, and suicidal ideation. Research has shown that the increase in mental health symptoms for children and adolescents has increased significantly, confirming a need for intervention and change. Based on the findings in the literature it is recommended that resources and interventions need to be provided and established to help with the mitigation of this pressing issue through education, screenings, and by providing more mental health resources.
