Abstract

This paper looks at ADHD and Learning difficulties (LD) to determines how they effect a concussion diagnoses by looking at the symptoms of ADHD and LD and how they correlate with concussions symptoms evaluated on SCAT-5 and Impact testing. There are clinical markers of concussion that overlap with the common symptoms of ADHD and LD. Student athletes with ADHD or LD are known to have to have impaired cognitive function which could impact the result of a concussion baseline test.

The purpose of this critically appraised topic is to examine the effectiveness of the SCAT 5 and impact testing on student-athletes who have ADHD or LD. Three articles where used to write this paper and their conclusions were put together to come up with a different suggestion that should be made in order to increase knowledge on this subject. These studies were original research that looked at student athlete who did and did not have ADHD and/or LD and did not currently have a concussion. These participants took a baseline test using either the SCAT-5 or Impact testing. And the results were combined to see who struggled the most.

On the SCAT 5 assessment and Impact testing athletes with ADHD or LD had higher symptom severity scores, specifically in the areas of fatigue, difficulty remembering, difficulty concentrating, trouble sleeping, and balance problems.
