Abstract

Emergency departments are known for being a very busy environment with high patient numbers and high nurse to patient ratios. This was especially increased during the COVID-19 pandemic due to the high need for healthcare and treatment of the disease. This was not only a traumatic experience for the patients but for the nurses as well, which turned many away from the profession. This topic is important to research to maintain the longevity and mental health of the nurses involved to uphold the high standards of healthcare and maintain nurse retention. Through comparison of research articles we can see how different resources and tools including lower nurse to patient ratios, mental health screens, and access to adequate supplies (like PPE) have increased job satisfaction and reduced turnover in emergency departments. This information can be applied to current nursing practice by either providing or continuing to maintain access to these resources to create a positive work environment that will reduce intent to leave and increase job satisfaction, all while improving the quality of patient care.
