Abstract

Successful phonics instruction begins with the alphabetic principle. In order for pre kindergarten and kindergarten students to grasp the alphabetic principle is it imperative they receive explicit instruction in alphabet knowledge. This presentation will explain the necessary components that go into teaching students alphabet knowledge through explicit instruction in letter names, letter sounds, and letter formations. This knowledge will take the abstract marks on a page in a book to a full understanding of phoneme grapheme correspondence. The proper steps taken in alphabet knowledge will build a bridge to successful phonics instruction thus allowing students to begin their journey through reading. In this session you will learn varying thoughts on the order in which to teach letters, how to include embedded mnemonic alphabet to your instruction, the explicit instruction of alphabet sounds, and how to incorporate multisensory instruction into letter formation.
